Trolltunga
One of Norway’s most iconic mountain attractions
Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most photographed rock formations, jutting out dramatically over Lake Ringedalsvatnet – about 700 meters above the water’s surface. This distinctive rock ledge sits at an altitude of nearly 1,200 meters and offers a view that has made the site world-famous. The surrounding nature is shaped by ice ages, glaciers, and erosion, and the spectacular landscape attracts mountain enthusiasts from all over the globe.
A demanding hike with a huge reward
The hike to Trolltunga usually starts in Skjeggedal, not far from Tyssedal and Odda. From here, you enter high mountain terrain where the trail winds past mountain slopes, moraine ridges, and open plains.
From P2 in Skjeggedal, the hike is approximately 27 km round trip and normally takes 8–12 hours. If you start from P3 Mågelitopp, the distance is shorter, around 20 km, with an estimated time of 7–10 hours. Although the trail is well marked, it requires good physical condition and mountain safety awareness – this is a full-day hike that requires careful planning.
In the summer season (June–September), experienced hikers can do the trip on their own, but an early start is recommended to avoid both darkness and peak hours on the trail. The rest of the year, a guided tour is mandatory, and local guides ensure safety and an enhanced experience.
Preparation and safety
High mountain weather can change rapidly. Proper hiking boots, warm clothing, rain gear, plenty of food and water, as well as a map and compass are essential. There is mobile coverage on parts of the hike, and there are emergency cabins that are to be used only in emergencies. Steep sections, long ascents, and altitude differences make the trip physically demanding – but the reward is one of Norway’s most spectacular viewpoints.
A sight you will never forget
When you finally stand on Trolltunga, the landscape opens up towards Lake Ringedalsvatnet and the surrounding mountain ranges. Walking out onto the rock ledge is an unforgettable experience – but please exercise extreme caution, as the area is unfenced.
From here you can also see towards the Folgefonna glacier, and the entire area offers several viewpoints and nature experiences for those wishing to explore further.
