Lake Bondhusvatnet
One of Hardanger’s most iconic hiking destinations
Lake Bondhusvatnet at Sundal in Kvinnherad is known as one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in Hardanger. The clear turquoise water, the mountains rising around the valley, and the Bondhusbreen glacier in the background create a landscape that looks almost surreal. This is a place that has attracted travelers since the 19th century – and its popularity has only grown with social media and the increasing interest in spectacular Norwegian nature.
An easy and accessible hike for everyone
The hike up to Lake Bondhusvatnet starts from the parking lot in Sundal and follows the historical "Ice Road" (Isvegen) – a 2.3 km gravel road originally built to transport ice from the Bondhusbreen glacier down to the fjord. Today, it is an easy and well-maintained trail suitable for families with children, motorized wheelchairs, and most visitors. The hike takes about two hours round trip at a leisurely pace.
Along the trail, you follow the Bondhuselva river up the valley, surrounded by beautiful cultural landscapes and dramatic mountain terrain. Once you arrive at the lake, a panoramic view opens up that truly rewards the journey – whether in sunshine, clouds, or light rain.
History and nature side by side
The Bondhusdalen valley is part of the landscape protection area surrounding Folgefonna National Park. Here, you can see Queen Sonja’s signature engraved in stone, commemorating the opening of the national park in 2005. History is also embedded in the path you walk on – built in 1863 to transport blocks of ice for export. Although the ice trade was short-lived, the path has become an important part of Hardanger’s hiking culture.
Practical Information
There is a fee for parking in Sundal, and the revenue goes towards the maintenance of the area. Please note that Lake Bondhusvatnet is a drinking water source, so swimming is prohibited, and camping must take place at least 50 meters from the water. Winter conditions can vary, but the hike is generally accessible year-round.
